Sensei Tom has been involved with Martial Arts since 1986, training in Kyokushin Karate under Shihan Eddie Emin.
Shihan Eddie is a living Karate legend and one of the few Australian instructors to have personally trained under and Graded with the founder of Kyokushin Karate, Mas Oyama. Shihan Eddie Emin was a fantastic role model to Sensei Tom and like a second father to him growing up. Not only did he teach Sensei Tom Kyokushin Karate but he also taught him about what he now knows to be Bushido and what it really stands for.
As a result of Sensei Tom’s past working experience in the security industry and Victoria Police, much of his Martial Arts training has been reality based. He believes that an essential component of any Martial Arts training must be reality based and must incorporate practical Self Defence skills.
The training and syllabus for Shin Yu Do Karate at Shuzoku Martial Arts has been created to provide effective Karate based training that has at its core a reality based Martial Arts system which will enable students, children and adults alike, to attain confidence, improved fitness and self-esteem and above all the ability to defend themselves in any situation.
Sensei Tom has his Bronze NCAS Certificate, Certificate 3 & 4 in Fitness, Level 1 ICS Instructor, Level 2 First Aid and his Working With Children Check

Testimonials from Shuzoku Martial Arts Members
I would like to thank you for your belief in me; as you remember when I first contacted you I was a little hesitant due to my age and my fitness level as I thought Karate was only for young or fit people. It has been approximatey 6 months since I have started training with you and at 52yo I am now feeling the healthiest I have been since my early twenties. David
Sensei Tom and Narelle have established a brilliant and enjoyable Dojo for all kids and families to take part in. Sensei Tom and the team at Shuzoku have given our son a chance like all the other children. I would like to thank them for taking the time in giving him this opportunity. Gaby & Anthos
Thanks Narelle and Tom for organising a great event! It's always awesome to go to these tournaments and see such great camaraderie amongst all the competitors and families and even better when once it's all done and dusted everyone gives each other a pat on the back and congratulates each other for their efforts. Very proud to be part of the Shuzoku Family. Nat
I looked at many martial art schools in the area and none come even close to how good this school is. They have an outstanding leadership development program for the juniors and as a result I'm witnessing my daughter's strength of character and confidence in self improve with every session. Adhering to strong traditional principles and a warm and inviting atmosphere, I cannot fault them in any way and I'm so very grateful my daughter has such a great place to develop the life skills she needs. Rod
I commend you both on the incredible atmosphere of togetherness that is evident in your dojo, and I need to be a part of that to not only learn and practice karate for my own enjoyment, but to be a part of your amazing club. Simone
You guys are doing a fantastic job. I have many things to thank Shuzoku Martial Arts for. Firstly my 8 year old son Jamie has been attending karate classes with you for over 2 years now. This has improved his focus, fitness, overall health and well being. He has a great “life attitude” and a healthy level of respect for others and himself that I have no doubt he has improved since joining Shuzoku. My wife Nicole attended your Women’s Self Defense Course last year and found this a very valuable experience. I also feel more secure now about her safety. “Thank you” does not really say it well enough. I would have no hesitation in recommending Shuzoku Martial Arts to anyone. James
We have been a part of this dojo for 4 years and cannot recommend it enough. Sensei and Sempai Narelle run such an impressive dojo. They take their jobs and their passion very seriously and it is reflected in the work they do. They are backed by a terrific leadership team and other Sempais who strive to not only better themselves, but to support and encourage other students to achieve their goals. Some many wonderful parents and kids help make this a very fun, warm and welcoming environment. Angela
Since transferring to Shuzoku from another local Dojo, the difference is beyond compare! My son's karate has improved greatly and his enthusiasm for his sport has eclipsed all expectations! Sensei Tom McMahon is an inspiration and has a natural talent for teaching. All the students from Kinda to Seniors, are so positive and friendly and the atmosphere is encouraging and supportive, with lots of opportunity to expand knowledge through seminars with international karate greats. Shuzoku has a healthy social club with lots of activities, but most of all, the Club has a strong community spirit and raises money for children's charities - an example of this is the recent "Ride for the Starlight Foundation", completed by Sensei and some of the Senior students. All up, a fantastic experience for anyone who loves or is interested in karate. Come and meet the Shuzoku crew, you won't be disappointed! Truelocal review
Sensei Tom's dedication and commitment to every child in his class is admirable. The kids love and respect him, as he does them. It is clear that he sees Martial Arts as more than just a sport- a way of connecting with kids and teaching them the fundamental skills for life. The kids have so much fun in every class but little do they realise how much they are learning from those 'warm up/ cool down' games and other fun activities. I would not hesitate to recommend Shuzoku Martial Arts to anyone who want their children or themselves to join Karate. Jacinta
Karate is not always about the art of martial arts itself. Not only has it taught me karate, it has also taught me discipline, commitment and respect not only for others, but also myself. Since starting to train under Sensei Tom I have lost almost 45kgs and dropped 4 dress sizes. I am the fittest, fastest and the strongest I ever have been. I am strong and confident and proud of what I have achieved not only in regards to weight loss and fitness but also pushing myself and learning the wonderful art of karate and everything else that comes with it. Earning each belt is a test for me of what I have learnt and how well I perform determines if I am worthy of that belt. When awarded with your next belt the emotion that comes with it is amazing. Everything I have achieved to date I wouldn't have been able to do without Sensei Tom and his wife Narelle pushing, supporting and believing in me, and for that I will be forever grateful.Katey
By far the best Family Dojo going around in the SE SuburbsJason
I wanted to let you know how great the presentation was at Crocs. Obviously our first one but really awesome to see the huge effort you guys put in to make the karate journey special for all your students. Marlene
Thank you Tom and Narelle for all that you do for us. The support and guidance that you’ve bestowed on our kids (and the biggest kid! 😉) has been invaluable. And we look forward to many more years with the Shuzoku Family! Natalie
Best decision I have ever made for my 5 year son. They have really worked with my son helping and developing him. not only with his karate techniques but his general well being and being able to stand up for himself and seeing his self worth! Thank you guys so much! Robyn
